Workshop for Beginners Beekeepers

The Bee Pollinator Advocate course is the first four-hour
course of the newly developed Certified Master Beekeeper
curriculum through the University of Missouri. It is designed
for all levels of interested parties to start beekeeping.

Participants pay $50 + $8 booklet for this class. Then are
required to have 1 year experience rearing bees and joining a
local beekeeping club prior to taking exam ($50 fee) to move
up to Apprentice Pollinator Beekeeper. You are NOT required to take any test.

Experienced beekeepers can test up through the program, with 5 years
experience necessary to be certified.

Currently, I manage the non-profit, Missouri Pollinator Conservancy Program. I am also the Director of the Midwest Master Beekeeper Program, which promotes quality and standardized beekeeping education in the states of Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Illinois. I was the Research Entomologist at the University of Missouri's Delta Research Center located in Portageville, MO. I received my doctorate from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2010, where I studied the susceptibility of Oriental fruit moth to selected insecticides and mixtures. I briefly worked with integrated pest management of bed bugs at Rutgers University as a Research Assistant for the Urban Entomology Department. Most recent research focused on management programs for the Asian citrus psyllid, the vector of citrus greening disease – a serious threat to citrus production in Florida, and citrus leafminer - a pest that contributes to the spread of canker. My research emphasized the development of efficient monitoring methods to evaluate control, economic feasibility, and impact on secondary pests to assist in making rational control decisions. I also evaluated new chemical tools for psyllid suppression and compatibility with natural enemies. I assisted growers with planning and evaluation of field tests to develop site specific season-long psyllid control which provided an information bridge between growers and researchers to communicate this information effectively to the industry.
